How to Fix a Tunneling Candle (The CORGI CANDLE Method) 

At CORGI CANDLE, we’ve tested candles extensively and found that the simplest fix is often the most effective.

If your candle has started tunneling, follow these steps to restore an even burn:

1. Use a Small Tool

Grab a butter knife or small spoon. You don’t need anything specialized, just something that allows you to carefully remove wax.

2. Remove the Excess Wax

Gently scrape wax from the sides of the tunnel. Focus on bringing the outer edges down so they match the center.

3. Level the Surface

Continue removing wax until the top surface is flat and even, with about 1/4 inch of wick exposed. This step is key to resetting how the candle burns.

4. Relight the Candle

Once the surface is level, light the candle as you normally would.

5. Allow a Full Melt Pool

Let the wax melt completely across the top, reaching all edges of the container. This ensures the candle “resets” and won’t tunnel again.

6. Extinguish at the Right Time

Blow out the candle once a full melt pool has formed. You should now have a smooth, even surface that will burn properly moving forward.
